The continent of Africa has an area of 30.3 million km² (22% of the total land surface of the earth) with a population of just over one billion people. The continent is considered the "cradle of humanity" where in the course of hominization the development of modern humans took place. Africa is bounded on the north by the Mediterranean, the west by the Atlantic Ocean, east of the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea. The coastline is 30,490 kilometers, which is relatively little compared to the large area landmass.
